FAQs
The Bigfoot Greenling plant pot is made in Munich from recyclable plastic. The next generation, Kobold, is made of 100% recycled plastic. We have been looking at alternative materials for a long time and are also pursuing some alternatives. However, many of the materials currently available, e.g., made from vegetable oil, are not (yet) viable alternatives. For example, the current situation shows how critical the production of commodities from food is. In addition, the materials do not have the properties we are looking for: specifically suitable for outdoor use, dimensionally and heat resistant, and frost and UV resistant.
The head gardener and his staff at the Würzburg Botanical Center tested various plants for months to withstand a wide range of conditions (sun, partial shade, shade).
Plant combinations were tried, discarded, and tried again until they were perfect. Plants were shipped across Germany on a test basis to ensure the logistics fit. Industrial designers fiddled with the hardware details. And we don't stop there... We've developed accessories like wheels and plan to offer more features like a watering app in the future.
Our plants are selected and grown by local quality growers in Germany. There are no long transport routes with a corresponding CO2 footprint or environmentally harmful preservatives or fertilizers. We do not buy plants from countries where the land is urgently needed for the local food supply.
Our Greenlings are outdoors, allowing butterflies, bees, and other insects to pollinate the flowers. In addition to providing food for insects, it is vital to butterflies, for example, by giving them space to lay their eggs and develop their caterpillars. To this end, the renaturation of arable land and the targeted fields of arable wild herbs is particularly helpful. For this purpose, we have concluded a flowering partnership as a first step, which preserves a field area in Greenling's name (www.bluehpatenschaft-muenchen.de).
In terms of production, we work with local manufacturer KVH Hartung from Krailling near Munich to make our plant pot. KVH Hartung has a recycling rate of 98 percent and produces particularly durable products. For shipping, we rely on climate-neutral shipping.
